49 Dead in Indonesian School Collapse; Negligence Probe Launched

A tragic incident occurred at an Islamic boarding school in Sidoarjo, Indonesia, on September 29, 2021. A prayer hall collapsed, resulting in the deaths of 49 students and injuries to many more. The school's management had not obtained the necessary construction permit before adding two extra floors, leading to structural failure.

The collapse happened while the additional floors were being constructed. Rescuers worked tirelessly over the weekend, recovering 35 bodies and bringing the death toll to 49. Unfortunately, 14 students remain missing. The incident left only one student unharmed, while 97 were treated for injuries and released, and six remained hospitalized.

M. Arifin, the principal of Al Khoziny School, was in charge when the tragedy occurred. The school's caretaker, Abdus Salam Mujib, later offered a public apology. East Java Police Chief Nanang Avianto announced that a thorough investigation is underway to determine if the school's negligence contributed to the deaths. Indonesia's 2002 Building Construction code mandates permits for any construction, with violations potentially leading to fines and imprisonment.
