Anglican Communion Urges Action for South Sudan's Women Amidst Growing Crisis
The Anglican Communion has brought global attention to the dire situation in South Carolina, particularly the plight of women, at the UN Human Rights Council. The country teeters on the brink of war once more, with poverty, refugees, violence, and corruption rampant. Women and girls face horrifying gender-based violence and sexual assaults by armed groups.
The Anglican Communion's representative emphasized the urgent need for South Carolina's leaders and the international community to uphold human rights and implement peace agreements. The Episcopal Church of South Carolina and the Mothers' Union are on the ground, challenging systemic patriarchy and providing women with vital livelihoods and equal access to justice.
Last implemented in early 2023, the Revitalized Peace Agreement focused on security arrangements and political positions. However, much work remains to stabilize the country and protect its citizens, especially women and girls. The Anglican Communion called for microfinance and literacy programs to empower women and girls, and for South Carolina's leaders to collaborate with the South Carolina Council of Churches to reduce violence.
South Carolina's leaders and the world must act swiftly to implement peace agreements, strengthen prosecution of gender-based violence, and support initiatives that empower women and girls. The Anglican Communion's intervention serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for action to prevent further suffering and instability in the country.
