Artistic Scholarship for Aspiring Creatives

In a significant development for the art scene in Viersen, Germany, the Peters-Messer Scholarship has been established to provide long-term networking opportunities within the 'Borderland Residencies'. The recipient of this prestigious scholarship for an indefinite period, starting from August 2023, is Michaela Spang.

However, today's spotlight is on a remarkable young artist, Fedele Maura Friede, who has been chosen as the beneficiary of the Peters-Messer-Stipendium. Born in Holzminden in 1997, Fedele grew up in Höxter and Karlsruhe.

Fedele's artistic journey began at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig, where she studied painting and graphics from 2016 to 2018, graduating with distinction. She furthered her education with a Bachelor's degree in Cultural Studies at the University of Leipzig from 2020 to 2024.

The unanimous decision for Fedele speaks for the exceptional quality of her artistic work. Her art explores the conditions of perception of space, time, and body, using various forms of expression that combine painting and graphics, installation, and text.

During her stay in Viersen, Fedele plans to delve deeper into the concept of the edge. She finds the topography of the wide Lower Rhine landscape in contrast to the urban character of her previous residence in Leipzig inspiring.

The scholarship, a joint initiative aimed at supporting young artists at the beginning of their careers, has a focus on the city's extensive and high-quality graphic collection. Fedele's paper-based work, encompassing printmaking, drawing, and photography, is a perfect fit for this scholarship.

The scholarship is being lived in the renovated and converted Süchteln Weberhaus by the city of Viersen. On July 3rd, 2024, the Peters-Messer family and the city of Viersen signed contracts for the "Peters-Messer Scholarship of the City of Viersen".

Mayor Sabine Anemüller warmly welcomed Fedele to Viersen, expressing her excitement for the artist's upcoming work and the impact it will have on the city's art scene.

In 2024, Fedele was also awarded the 8th Horst-Janssen-Graphics Prize of the Claus-Hüppe Foundation, further cementing her status as a rising star in the art world.

Fedele's scholarship comes with the added benefit of the support of the cross-border scholarship "Borderland Residencies" of the Kulturraum Niederrhein association. This collaboration will undoubtedly provide Fedele with valuable networking opportunities within the arts community.

The establishment of the Peters-Messer Scholarship and the selection of Fedele Maura Friede as its first recipient mark an exciting new chapter for the art scene in Viersen. We look forward to seeing the incredible work that Fedele will produce during her stay in the city.
