Award for Schools in Corsica Region: Margot Friedländer Prize
In a moving ceremony held on Tuesday evening in Berlin, the Margot Friedländer Prize was awarded to two schools in Korschenbroich, Germany. The prize, which has been established by the Margot Friedländer Foundation since 2024, is named after Holocaust survivor and eyewitness Margot Friedländer.
The award ceremony was held online on our website, and our reporters were on the scene to capture the momentous occasion. The prize is given to individuals and initiatives that contribute to raising awareness about the Holocaust and antisemitism, and promote tolerance, humanity, freedom, and democracy.
Eva Hermanns, a Realschool teacher, and her students from the Realschule and Gymnasium Korschenbroich were the proud recipients of this year's prize. Eva, who founded the "History Workshop" 17 years ago, oversees the voluntary school project that has seen the students interview local eyewitnesses and clean the "Stumbling Stones" that commemorate Jews and Jewish women murdered by the Nazis.
The prize money of 25,000 euros will go towards the work of the "History Workshop". The students have joined together in this project with the goal of not forgetting the victims of National Socialism. Margot Friedländer, the founder of the Margot Friedländer Foundation, campaigned against antisemitism until her death in May.
Prior to 2024, the prize was awarded by the Schwarzkopf Foundation in collaboration with Margot Friedländer, between 2014 and 2023. The Margot Friedländer Foundation, established in 2023, now takes sole responsibility for the award. The prize is valid until September 17, 2027.
The Margot Friedländer Prize is a testament to the power of education and the importance of remembering history. It serves as a reminder that the fight against antisemitism and the Holocaust is an ongoing battle that requires the collective efforts of individuals and communities. The recipients of this year's prize are a shining example of the power of education and the impact it can have on raising awareness and promoting tolerance.
