Birmingham City Council employs educators as sign language interpreters for the media briefing titled "This House Doesn't Mix" held by the BMA.

In a significant step towards promoting inclusivity, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced the use of sign language interpreters in its media communications and public events. This decision aims to bridge communication gaps between BMA staff and hearing-impaired individuals, as well as the general public seeking services at City Hall.

The initiative was demonstrated during a recent press conference streamed live on BMA's Facebook page, marking the first time BMA used sign language interpreters in its media outreach. Teachers, acting as sign language interpreters, played a crucial role in this endeavour, ensuring that hearing-impaired people receive equal access to important civic information.

This move is in line with BMA's "Bangkok for All" inclusive policy, which encourages the collaboration with organisations like the Thai Deaf People’s Foundation. Under this policy, BMA staff, district officers, and community volunteers across all 50 districts are being trained in basic Thai sign language. This training is designed to improve direct communication capabilities with the hearing-impaired community, promoting participation and equality.

Aekvarunyoo Amrapala, Spokesman for the BMA, emphasised BMA's mission to ensure equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of differences. He reaffirmed BMA's commitment to the principles of human rights and equality, and to creating a livable city for all, including the hearing-impaired.

BMA is also dedicated to promoting city designs that are inclusive for all, and its vision includes making its schools a welcoming space for students with special needs. The organisation is developing accessible communication channels for all groups, including the hearing-impaired, as part of its ongoing efforts to build an equitable city that values diversity and inclusiveness.

This initiative is an important step forward in promoting the participation of all community members and building an equitable society. By making information accessible to all citizens, regardless of hearing ability, BMA is demonstrating its commitment to fostering a city where everyone has an equal chance to thrive.
