Bishops Slam ICE Raids, Budget Bill's 'Immoral' Priorities
Archbishop José H. Gomez has spoken out against recent ICE raids in Los Angeles. He, along with other bishops, has criticized the 2026 budget for cutting services to the poor while ensuring tax breaks for the wealthy.
The bishops argue that economic decisions should prioritize the poor and vulnerable. They have condemned the deportation of non-criminal immigrants and the separation of families. This is not the first time they have spoken out against the Trump administration's immigration policies. However, reaching Catholics with these messages has become challenging due to reduced communication channels.
Archbishop William E. Lori has also criticized the erosion of trust caused by immigration tactics. Looking back, Archbishop Borys Gudziak, a leading member of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, had previously emphasized that economic decisions must primarily benefit the poor.
The bishops' statements may inspire reflection on how to better communicate their teachings. Despite their concerns, the 2026 budget will proceed as planned.
