BRICS Summit 2023: 11 Countries Adopt 126 Commitments, Welcoming Indonesia as Full Member
The 17th BRICS Summit concluded in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with leaders adopting a comprehensive 31-page 'Joint Declaration' outlining 126 commitments across strategic areas. Notably, Russia's President Vladimir Putin and China's President Xi Jinping joined virtually, while Indonesia was officially welcomed as a full member, expanding the alliance to 11 countries.
The summit, themed 'Strengthening Global Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance', focused on six key topics. These included global health cooperation, trade and investment, finance, climate change, and artificial intelligence. The event saw the launch of several new initiatives, such as a climate finance agreement, a BRICS AI global governance framework, and a Partnership for the Elimination of Socially Determined Diseases.
BRICS, representing approximately 56% of the global population and around 44% of the world's GDP, continues to grow in influence. Last year, it expanded to include 10 new 'partner' countries, bringing the total to 21 members. The alliance now comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, and Indonesia, with the addition of Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam as partner states.
The 17th BRICS Summit underscored the alliance's commitment to multilateral cooperation and sustainable development. With its expanding membership and ambitious initiatives, BRICS continues to play a significant role in global governance, representing a substantial portion of the world's population and economic output.
