Brunswick's Neue Oberschule Expands with €32.3M Barrier-Free Cafeteria
The city of Brunswick is expanding the Neue Oberschule with a new cafeteria area, set to be barrier-free and connected to the existing building. The extension, costing approximately €32.3 million, is scheduled for completion by the 2027/2028 school year and will accommodate up to 50 additional students.
The extension will include 24 general classrooms, five seminar rooms, and three chemistry labs, along with additional ancillary and differentiation rooms, and toilet facilities. The existing building will undergo renovations to include science labs for biology, IT, and physics, and the teacher's room and reception area will be enlarged.
The project is being implemented by Hochtief PPP Schulpartner Braunschweig GmbH, who will also operate the building after completion. The city has secured a grant of around €1.5 million from the federal government's 'Climate-friendly New Construction' funding program. Climate protection measures include a photovoltaic system, extensive green roofing, and facade greening.
Mayor Dr. Thorsten Kornblum marked the start of the project by laying the first sod on Monday, September 29th. Upon completion, the extension will replace temporary modular buildings, providing a modern, climate-friendly learning environment for students.
