Burlington Students Lead Survey on Impact of Community Service

A unique survey project is underway in Burlington, ON, exploring the impact of local volunteering on students and the community. Led by Community Development Halton (CDH) and funded by the Burlington Foundation, the project aims to understand the effects of 40 hours of volunteer work as a graduation requirement. Students from Burlington were tasked with defining the research, creating a questionnaire, and gathering data from the Halton Region community. They employed diverse methods, including social media outreach and visiting local skate parks. As of now, 225 surveys have been completed, with data collection ongoing until February 2026. The survey focuses on ratings of volunteer experiences and how students balanced their personal lives with their local volunteering. CDH, led by Executive Director Rishia Burke, operates a volunteer portal and specializes in community planning. Iman Kaur serves as the staff lead for this project. The project, set to conclude in February 2026, will culminate in a report detailing the findings. The insights gathered are expected to inform future local volunteering initiatives and policies, potentially shaping the student experience and community peace in the region.
