Clean-Up Event Organized by Keep New Zealand Beautiful in 2025
In Mount Maunganui, school children are gearing up for the Sustainable Coastlines Phoenix Mt Maunganui Clean-up, a local event that forms part of the national Clean Up New Zealand Week. This annual event, scheduled for August 11–15, 2025, encourages community participation in cleaning local environments, promoting waste reduction, and fostering environmental conservation.
Clean Up New Zealand Week is not just a one-day affair; it's a week-long commitment to make a difference. During this week, communities across the country engage in various activities, from cleaning streets and parks to preserving beaches and streams.
One of the highlights of Clean Up Week is the inclusion of competitions, particularly targeting schools, to motivate involvement and promote awareness about litter and waste management.
For those interested in participating, registration is free and typically involves signing up through local schools or community networks. Equipment such as litter pickers and gloves are usually provided by the organizers during these events.
Beyond Clean Up Week, communities continue to take action against litter throughout the year. For instance, monthly community clean-ups are held in Wellington, and stream restoration projects are carried out by groups in Auckland later in August and September.
To delve deeper into the topics of recycling and biodegradability, the Science Learning Hub has curated resources suitable for primary teachers. These resources cover various aspects, including climate action, waste management, plastics and recycling, the future of plastics, Flight Plastics recycling technology, and "Down the drain".
Citizen science activities, such as "Litter intelligence", "Mizuiku Upstream Battle", "Backyard Battle", "The Plastic Tide - case study", and "Litterati", are also available for individuals who wish to contribute to scientific research while making a difference in their local environment.
Whether you're a school, a business, a local community, a youth group, or an individual, Clean Up New Zealand Week offers an opportunity to join forces and make a positive impact on the environment. So, mark your calendars for August 11–15, 2025, and get ready to contribute to a cleaner and greener New Zealand!
