New Comprehensive School Altenessen-Süd to Open in 2026

The city of Essen is set to establish a new comprehensive school, Altenessen-Süd, at Karolingerstraße 93, with operations commencing in the 2026/2027 academic year.

The school's interim location will be at the Bildungspark, where two caretakers will ensure security and order during this period. The school's final name will be determined by the school conference once it begins operation. Currently, the name "Comprehensive School in the Park" is favored by the founding team.

The school will start with four classes to accommodate growing student demand. Projections suggest that 116 students per year can be accommodated in these initial classes. Upon moving into the new building at Erbslohstraße 3, the school will continue with six classes.

Additional material costs for IT, telephony, and administrative staff amount to 407,106 euros. These costs are budgeted for, with funding to be secured on an annual basis initially and then integrated into the budget from 2027. The equipment of learning and specialist rooms, as well as administrative areas, will be funded from the existing budget of the school department.

From August 2026, the city will cover personnel costs for at least one school secretary and one caretaker for Altenessen-Süd. The rental of the buildings at Karolingerstraße 93 will be decided separately.

Further information can be found in document 1235/2025/4. After the completion of the new building, the school will no longer use shared specialist rooms. Upon moving into the new building, two additional posts will be necessary.

From 2027, the city portal will cover personnel and equipment costs. The staffing requirement will increase with the growing number of students. The city council will decide on the school's establishment on 24 September. From 2027, the city portal will include the funding of the additional expenses in the budget plan.

The head of the new comprehensive school project is not publicly specified in available information. The school will begin with the aim of meeting the educational needs of the local community and providing a high-quality education for all students.

The school's establishment is an exciting development for the city of Essen, and it is anticipated that it will greatly benefit the local community. Further updates on the school's progress will be provided as they become available.
