During the summer of 2022, a student embarked on a captivating journey of astrophysics research as part of Princeton University's International Institutes Program (Princeton IIP). Xander Jenkin, Natural Sciences Correspondent, shares this inspiring account.

The participant worked alongside Professor Romain Teyssier, delving into the intricacies of shock waves in gas clouds within the cosmos. The research involved creating, debugging, and testing code to improve the results of computer simulations, leading to modifications in the algorithm used to better comprehend gas collisions.

The Princeton IIP offers a unique blend of academic rigour and social engagement, providing opportunities for students to forge connections and create lasting memories. Social activities ranged from outdoor game nights and kayaking adventures to telescope observation nights, rock climbing, and even an escape room experience.

In addition to the Princeton IIP, the university hosts various summer programs related to physics and astrophysics. These programs often have application deadlines in early spring, with applications opening several months prior. For instance, a physics program with an astrophysics focus has a deadline around early March 2025 and opens in early December 2024.

While specific application details for the Princeton Astrophysics Undergraduate Summer Research Program (USRP) were not found, the process usually involves an online application including research interests, academic records, and potentially recommendations. To confirm precise requirements and deadlines, it is best to consult Princeton's official channels or contact their undergraduate program coordinator directly.

The USRP also included numerous seminars and colloquiums on astrophysics research methods and topics. Catered lunches were provided twice a week before these sessions, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among participants.

At the end of the summer, the participant presented a final presentation and paper to fellow students and faculty members, showcasing the results of their research. The student wholeheartedly recommends the USRP for students considering majoring in Physics or Astrophysics.
