The city of Oberhausen and the Servicebetriebe Oberhausen (SBO) have commenced the construction of a climate-friendly extension to Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium, with the official groundbreaking taking place on August 25, 2025. The new building, located in the southeast and adjacent to the convent, will be an addition to the existing school structure.

Preparatory work for the construction site was carried out during the summer holidays of an unspecified year, paving the way for the commencement of the project. Archaeological surveys and drilling for a soil assessment were conducted on the site in 2022, ensuring that the construction would not disturb any historical artefacts.

The new building will be a modern, sustainable structure, featuring a glazed bridge connecting the 1st and 2nd floors, a PV system installed on the roof, and a heating system operated with a ground-source heat pump. The basement will contain a multi-purpose room, teachers' room, differentiation rooms, student restrooms, and an exit to Friedrich-Stender-Weg due to the building's slope. The new building will also be barrier-free, with ramps and an elevator, ensuring accessibility for all.

The building application for the expansion was submitted by the city of Oberhausen and the SBO in March 2025, following numerous coordination meetings and work hours by the commissioned planning offices. The application was approved in June of an unspecified year.

Work on the construction site was temporarily halted at the beginning of 2023 due to the additional burden of setting up refugee accommodations resulting from the Ukraine conflict. The ordnance disposal service inspected the site at an unspecified time to ensure safety. Earthworks for the new building are scheduled to begin in September.

The new building is expected to be inaugurated after the summer holidays in 2027. The expansion is part of the KfW-approved funding for the "Climate-Friendly New Building" program, demonstrating the commitment to sustainable development in the city of Oberhausen. The new building will house four modern specialized classrooms (physics, biology, chemistry) with preparation rooms, providing state-of-the-art facilities for the students of Bertha-von-Suttner-Gymnasium.
