Contemplating Paterson: Exploring Personal Inquiry in Scholarly Studies

In a previous piece titled "The Project That Made Me a Researcher: 8 Things Infancy Teaches Us About Research", we delved into the personal journey of a researcher. Today, we're focusing on a new project that has once again piqued the interest of this scholar - the analysis of lead in Trenton, New Jersey.

This research project, undertaken as part of a research-based course, is a departure from the author's earlier work on Paterson's transformation from America's wealthiest town to one of its poorest. The author's fascination with Trenton began during their daily commute on NJ Transit's Main Line, covering a route from Secaucus to Ridgewood.

The analysis of lead in Trenton is a standalone project, not related to the author's earlier research on Paterson. However, the author found resonance in William Carlos Williams' five-book poem Paterson and the Paterson Literary Review archives, which dealt with people's lack of identification with their local environments.

In Trenton, the author observed a city marked by looming factory remnants, abandoned silk mills, a bustling downtown area, and a multicultural diaspora. The author's personal curiosity about Trenton led to this research project, aiming to understand people's understanding of their local space, particularly in a non-physical sense.

The Trenton lead analysis project may have local impact, similar to the author's earlier work on Paterson. However, as a new project, relevant data or sources may not yet exist, requiring extra effort or original research. At this stage, the specific findings from the Trenton lead analysis research project have not been revealed.

The author found value in writing about a topic that had personally piqued their curiosity, a sentiment echoed in the exploration of something you have wondered about in a way untouched by most academics. This small, yet worthwhile thrill drives the author's research, making each project a personal journey of discovery and learning.
