CyberFirst Girls Competition 2023: Hillcrest School and Henrietta Barnett School Crowned Winners

The winners of the CyberFirst Girls competition were announced on March 12, 2023. The event, organised by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), saw a record number of participants this year. Hillcrest School and Sixth Form Centre from Birmingham was named 'Top Scoring State Newcomer' and won a £4000 prize. Meanwhile, Henrietta Barnett School from North London was crowned 'Top Scoring Team'.

The competition, aiming to inspire more girls to pursue cyber and technology, attracted 14,500 girls and 4159 teams. Since its launch in 2017, around 85,000 girls have taken part in the NCSC's flagship contest for schools. Despite the growing interest, the UK's cyber workforce gap continues to rise, reaching over 93,000 unfilled positions last year, a 27% annual increase. Currently, women make up only 17% of the UK's cyber workforce.

The CyberFirst Girls competition continues to grow, with this year's event setting a new record for participation. The awards for Hillcrest School and Henrietta Barnett School recognise their exceptional performance. However, the competition also highlights the need for more girls to consider careers in cyber and technology to help bridge the significant workforce gap in the UK.
