Demanding Democrats Face Off Against Union Leaders as Party Members Shift Towards Trump Allegiance

In the aftermath of the 2020 election, labor unions have intensified their opposition to Donald Trump's administration's labor policies, employing a variety of strategies to re-engage members who voted for the former president.

One key approach has been legal resistance. Unions have become adept at using the courts to block or delay Trump administration rulemakings and enforcement actions that undermine workers’ rights. This includes attempts to freeze safety regulations and make union organizing harder for federal employees. Unions draw on their experienced legal teams and membership base ready for direct action at short notice.

Another strategy involves member training and mobilization. Unions proactively train their members on labor rights, preparing them to respond immediately when rights are threatened. This readiness strengthens their capacity to challenge employer or government retaliation effectively.

Internal reform and engagement efforts are also being undertaken. In some unions, especially in the building trades, there are challenges in re-engaging members who supported Trump. Reform-minded locals are advocating for greater member democracy, such as restoring member votes on contract approvals, and organizing social events to build a stronger rank-and-file base.

In certain cases, union leadership has taken a conciliatory approach, seeking to find common ground with Trump or his allies. For example, the building trades federation made appeals to Trump regarding job losses, while simultaneously grappling with how to address immigrant worker concerns amid administration crackdowns.

Coalition building is another tactic being employed. State labor federations are uniting across multiple states to oppose various Trump policies, signaling a strategic coordination at higher organizational levels.

Direct confrontation at agency level is also evident, with labor groups at agencies like the EPA vocally resisting actions that void union contracts. This indicates ongoing frontline battles against the administration’s labor setbacks.

Union leaders have warned Democrats about the potential loss of working-class voters, and their concerns about their own struggles, including flagging membership and criticism that they are losing touch with everyday workers, are not lost on the party. Despite endorsing Kamala Harris, many of their members scoffed at her candidacy.

The shift toward Trump among blue-collar voters was the culmination of a trend in recent elections. While the disconnect between workers and leaders is not intractable, several labor voices described President Joe Biden's term as only momentarily positive.
