Dental education institution Manav Rachna Dental College and the Indian Dental Association initiate the first fellowship in North India specializing in sports dentistry.

In a groundbreaking move, Manav Rachna Dental College (MRDC) in collaboration with the Indian Dental Association (IDA) has introduced North India's first Fellowship in Sports Dentistry. This pioneering initiative aims to train dental professionals in the prevention, management, and rehabilitation of sports-related oral injuries.

The Krida Dant Suraksha Volunteer Training, a youth-focused outreach component, is another part of this programme. It seeks to create oral health ambassadors within sports communities, emphasising the vital role of oral health in athletic performance and injury prevention.

Dr. Amit Bhalla, Vice President of Manav Rachna Educational Institutions, expressed pride in leading this change. He highlighted the importance of oral health for athletes and emphasised that India's growing status as a global sporting hub necessitates holistic athlete care, with oral health now being brought to the forefront.

Dr. Ashok Dhoble, Secretary of the Indian Dental Association, underscored the importance of preventive care and community engagement in sports dentistry. He emphasised that this programme prepares dental professionals to prioritise athletes' oral health throughout their careers, promotes the use of custom mouthguards, and broadens awareness of oral hygiene in sports communities.

The field of sports dentistry remains largely uncharted in India, especially in structured academic and preventive formats. However, this Fellowship marks a significant step towards integrating oral healthcare into sports science.

The event was attended by eminent dignitaries, sports and dental professionals, academic leaders, students, and members of the dental fraternity. The launch of the Fellowship in Sports Dentistry reflects MRDC’s commitment to blending academic excellence with community impact.

Manav Rachna Educational Institutions (MREI) is a symbol of excellence in education, with over 41,000 alumni, 135+ global academic collaborations, and 80+ Innovation & Incubation Entrepreneurial Ventures. MREI has consistently been ranked among the top in India by various organisations and holds QS 5-Star ratings for Teaching, Employability, Academic Development, Facilities, Social Responsibility, and Inclusiveness.

MREI also operates twelve schools nationwide, offering Indian and International curricula such as IB and Cambridge. One of its premier institutions, Manav Rachna University (MRU), is ranked among the top 100 universities in the NIRF Rankings 2024 with Rank 92 and was placed 38 in the Dental Category.

The surge of organized and competitive sports across India has increased the risk of dental and facial injuries among athletes. Prof. Dr. Sanjay Srivastava, Vice Chancellor of Manav Rachna International Institute of Research and Studies, noted that the programme addresses a glaring gap and aligns with national health and fitness agendas.

Volunteers will be trained in first-response dental care, importance of custom mouthguards, injury reporting protocols, and oral hygiene maintenance for athletes. This initiative reflects MRDC’s vision to blend academic excellence with community health impact and underscores oral health as a critical facet of overall athlete wellbeing and performance enhancement.
