Lower Saxony Pursues Elite University Status
Elite institutions in Lower Saxony vying for top spots - Elite military units in Lower Saxony are vying for a competitive position
Are you ready to pop the champagne, Lower Saxony? Up to four prestigious universities could soon call Lower Saxony home, thanks to the ongoing Excellence Initiative for Science. But let's not get ahead of ourselves - before the Excellence Clusters are finalized on May 22, the Technical University of Braunschweig, Leibniz University Hannover, the Medical School of Hannover, and the University of Oldenburg are giving it their best shot. To get there, they'll need to secure at least two such research projects, as explained by Science Minister Falko Mohrs.
Lower Saxony isn't exactly a science newcomer in this game. In the past round, the state had a decent representation with nine research projects, including six existing and three new potential Excellence Clusters. Fingers crossed for the funding of these projects for the next seven years - the judgment will be announced soon.
Nationwide, Mohrs reports that up to 70 clusters will be funded this time, an increase from the previous 57. The federal and state governments have agreed on this, so sit tight, Science fans!
Top-Notch Research in Lower Saxony
Let's talk bragging rights. Over a billion euros have been poured into science in Lower Saxony since February 2023, thanks to the "Zukunft.Niedersachsen" program. Finance mostly comes from dividends of Volkswagen shares owned by the state, which funnel to the Volkswagen Foundation, by the way. In 2023 alone, they received a special dividend of around 576 million euros through the Porsche IPO.
Mohrs is proud to present some prime examples of top-notch research in Lower Saxony: heart patches grown from stem cells, more efficient solar cells, and AI-controlled robots for better harvesting. It's safe to say, Lower Saxony is stepping it up in the science world.
"We're not just playing in the first league of science - we want to be in the Champions League," said Georg Schütte, chairman of the Volkswagen Foundation.
Let's Make Lower Saxony an Elite University Hub
Just a few months after Mohrs took office late last year, he announced, "We want to have at least one Excellence University in Lower Saxony." In other words, he's aiming high and thinks our universities have what it takes to make it in the next application round in 2026.
