EV Charging Stations Face Urgent Need for Improvement

Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations face significant challenges, with nearly one-third of charging attempts failing. This impacts consumers due to interoperability issues and fragmentation in charging infrastructure. The situation calls for urgent improvement.

Currently, only 71% of charging attempts succeed. Success rates drop to 70% after three years at new stations, highlighting the need for preventive maintenance programs. The first-time charge experience success rate (FTCSR) is a more accurate measure of driver experience than site uptime statistics.

Compatibility issues arise when software systems send out firmware or software updates. Complexity stems from multiple software systems that must work in harmony. Older hardware cannot be upgraded to newer protocols without significant equipment replacement, further complicating matters. Regulatory oversight of EV charging stations is limited compared to gasoline pumps, exacerbating these issues.

To address these challenges, the report recommends adopting FTCSR as a central metric. It also suggests implementing preventive maintenance programs and collaborative industry approaches to standardize protocols and share data. ChargerHelp! recommends improving maintenance response times, increasing technician training and certification, and enhancing communication between operators and customers.

Despite 64% of Americans living within two miles of an EV charging station, nearly one-third of charging attempts fail due to interoperability challenges and fragmentation in charging infrastructure. To ensure a seamless charging experience, industry stakeholders must adopt the first-time charge success rate as a key metric, invest in preventive maintenance, and collaborate to standardize protocols and share data. This will improve maintenance response times, technician training, and communication between operators and customers, ultimately enhancing the EV charging experience for consumers.
