Vietnamese Student Võ Trọng Khải Wins Gold at International Mathematical Olympiad
Võ Trọng Khải, a Year-12A1 student at Phan Bội Châu High School for the Gifted in Nghệ An Province, has made history by winning a gold medal at the 2025 International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Khải scored an impressive 38 points, leading his team to victory alongside another gold medalist, Trần Minh Hoàng.
Khải's journey to success began in Xuân Hội Commune, formerly in Nghi Xuân District (now Đan Hải Commune) in Hà Tĩnh Province. His passion for mathematics was inspired by his father, who nurtured his love for numbers through playful games and puzzles from a young age. This early encouragement fostered a deep love for mathematics and strong logical thinking skills in Khải.
Khải's talent and relentless effort earned him numerous awards before the IMO gold, including a silver medal at the 2025 Asian Informatics Olympiad with a perfect score on one problem. His achievements extend beyond the IMO, with victories in national and regional informatics competitions.
At the 2025 IOI, Khải was the youngest competitor from Vietnam and one of the few Year 10 students to medal at this level. His silver placed him 54th among 334 contestants from 90 countries and territories.
Hậu, another Vietnamese student who won a silver medal at the same competition, grew up in a makeshift home that doubled as his parents' scrap collection point in Tân Hội Commune. Entering Hà Tĩnh High School for the Gifted, Hoàng scored 9.75/10 in mathematics, topping the entrance rankings.
In his first national competition, Khải secured the second prize in mathematics. As a Year 8 student at Nguyễn Trãi Secondary School, Hoàng skipped a grade to take the Year 9 provincial mathematics competition and came first. One year later, in Australia, he claimed gold, earning 35 points out of a possible 42.
Khải's passion for mathematics was sparked by his father when he was still in kindergarten, through playful number games and mathematics puzzles. Three years ago, Khải made headlines when he scored a perfect 20/20 in the entrance exam for the school's mathematics class, a record-breaking result.
Khải views mathematics not just as knowledge acquisition but as a tool to sharpen logical thinking and aid learning in other fields. His achievement contributes to the standing of Vietnamese students in international intellectual competitions and reflects the dedication of his educators.

In the realm of education and self-development, there's been a breakthrough in the sports analysis field as AI has begun to help athletes like Võ Trọng Khải improve their performance. Khải, who excelled in mathematics, could potentially benefit from AI-assisted sports analysis when he transitions into other fields of interest, such as sports.
Furthermore, the education system in Vietnam can learn from Khải's journey. His nurturing environment, fostered by his father's encouragement and the supportive educational system, played a significant role in his success. Similar supportive structures could be implemented to foster the same love for learning and logical thinking skills in other students.
Lastly, Khải's achievements serve as an example for aspiring young minds, demonstrating that success can be achieved through dedication, passion, and a strong foundation in education, whether it be mathematics, sports, or any other field.
