Exploration Leading to a Scholar's Role: Practical Journalism and a Globally Acclaimed Cathedral
Emma Kaeser, a diligent student with a knack for uncovering the intriguing, embarked on a transformative journey that saw her evolve from a curious mind to a seasoned researcher.
Her first foray into research was a personal one, as she delved into topics that piqued her interest, often interviewing her mother during the research process. However, it was a project on Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan that truly marked her transition.
The choice to research the iconic cathedral was inspired by ongoing building renovations and the elevation of the resident Archbishop of New York to Cardinal prelate. This project, a year-long endeavour, was a requirement of a high school journalism course that emphasised learning by doing and immediate writing of articles.
The third assignment was particularly challenging, requiring more involved and independent research, with each student picking a topic of their choice and spending the entire second semester researching and writing about it. The teacher instructed the students to produce a twenty-page New York Magazine-esque article due at the end of the year.
Emma's project allowed her to find her voice as a researcher. She conducted extensive research, attending mass services, delving into the cathedral's history, and interviewing a diverse array of individuals, including churchgoers, tourists, priests, musicians, specialists, and even a close friend of the Cardinal.
Her individual understanding started to fit into a greater discussion, as she began to see the cathedral's roles in various communities, from New York City to the international Catholic Church, America's conservative political scene, and the tourist industry. The project reinforced Emma's belief that her voice mattered outside of the classroom.
By the end of the project, Emma felt that her voice mattered outside of the classroom and that her final draft was entirely her own, as she had independently constructed a distinct set of findings that were valuable in a larger context. The outcome was a twenty-plus-page article delineating the roles that Saint Patrick's Cathedral plays in various communities, a testament to Emma's growth as a researcher.
Emma Kaeser, now a Social Sciences Correspondent, reflects on this transformative journey, a testament to the power of independent research and the pursuit of knowledge in uncovering one's potential.
