Facebook Invests $1M in University of Waterloo AI Learning Research

Facebook is investing in the future of education by establishing the Facebook Chair in the Future of Work and Learning at the University of Waterloo. The social media giant is contributing $1 million CAD to fund this initiative, which aims to explore how AI can transform learning and work readiness. The university, renowned for its hands-on co-op program, will lead this innovative research.

The partnership between Facebook and the University of Waterloo is not new. They have previously collaborated on projects like the Kids on Campus program and the Women in Computer Science program. Now, they are joining forces again to host the Futures Lab: An AI Prototyping Workshop on October 6. Students will co-develop cutting-edge AI-powered learning prototypes and receive direct feedback, gaining valuable hands-on experience.

Leading this initiative is Professor Edith Law, an esteemed Computer Science professor and Executive Director of the University of Waterloo's Future of Work Institute. She will serve as the inaugural Facebook Chair, bringing her expertise to guide this innovative research. The university's innovative approach to learning, as experienced by the author and their sister, has proven beneficial for students' careers.

Facebook's $1 million CAD contribution will establish the Facebook Chair and support the AI prototyping workshop. This partnership aims to shape the future of learning and work readiness by exploring the potential of AI. With the University of Waterloo's emphasis on experiential learning, students will gain practical skills and insights into the future of work.
