Fellow scholars honing skills side by side
Fresh Take:
Two generational carpenters-in-the-making, Sigurður Brynjar Pálsson and Sölvi Steinn Sigurðsson, are honing their craft at FB's evening carpentry school. These duo-students have big plans for their construction skills, including building a family guesthouse at their summer home next summer.
Byko's Boss wants DIY Maintenance
Sigurður, CEO of BYKO, shares the sentiment, noting, "I've always enjoyed working with my hands and creating things. In my high school years, I worked for a construction contractor, but life took me on a different path. Yet, the DIY spirit is strong within me, especially when it comes to home and countryside maintenance at our summer home."
University Business Student's Crafty Side
Younger member Sölvi, 21, is studying business at the University of Iceland. Despite initially being hesitant, he decided to embark on the carpentry journey with his father. "I've always been interested in building and working with my hands, and it was a no-brainer when Dad asked me to join him in school," explains the university student.
On Combining Business and Carpentry
Sölvi finds the integration of business studies and hands-on carpentry educational quite fulfilling: "It's amazing to step away from academics and immerse myself in a physical task. Juggling both can be challenging, but it's all about organization and perspective."
Both father and son appreciate the hands-on learning and are making the most of their experience.
Quality Time and Learning
Attending school together has been a special bonding experience for them. Sölvi expresses, "It's a unique opportunity to spend quality time with Dad and witness a different side of him. It's overwhelmingly satisfying." Sigurður adds, "We've always been close and sharing this learning journey has resulted in some invaluable discussions and lessons."
New Perspectives and Opportunities
The carpentry course has proven to be tough, especially with the three-dimensional thinking required. Sigurður remarks, "The basic drawing courses were quite challenging. But embracing this new approach to thinking has been worthwhile." On the other hand, Sölvi exclaims, "The variety of topics covered in carpentry is astounding, and it's designed for everyone, from rookies to experienced builders."
Sigurður aims to graduate in the fall of 2023 and might pursue a master's degree. The carpentry education will undoubtedly serve him well in his role at BYKO and his personal projects at home.
Useful Knowledge for Life
Sölvi, nestled in the student realm, believes his carpentry skills will benefit him in the future, be it at work or in constructing his own residence. He hints at an idea brewing – a potential family carpentry venture called "Fathers on Tour."
Sigurður, ever advocating for lifelong learning, underscores the importance of carpentry skills in their practical applications, stating, "Carpentry can only broaden my perspective and strengthen me at work and in my personal life." This educational journey has delivered a host of fascinating individuals from diverse backgrounds, making it an enriching experience for both father and son.
In the midst of their carpentry education, Sigurður, echoes the sentiment that hands-on learning in this field is not just beneficial for work at BYKO, but also contributes significantly to his personal growth and lifestyle. Meanwhile, Sölvi, propounds an opinion that the knowledge gained from carpentry-and-self-development courses will be invaluable in his future, whether it's for professional business dealings or constructing his own lifestyle through personal-growth projects.
