Over three eventful days, experts, scholars, and educators from around the Lusophone world are gathering together - both in-person and online - to discuss the teaching and learning of the Portuguese language. The initiative is led by the Superior School of Education Tchico Té, Guinea-Bissau's first institution to offer a master's degree in Portuguese Language.

Julio Azevedo Joao da Silva, a member of the organizing committee and Portuguese language professor, says, "This event should serve as a scientific contribution that will endure." The inspiration for this gathering comes from the school itself, aiming to strengthen scientific cooperation within the Guinea-Bissau educational system.

The Portuguese language has the backing of the Camões Institute, with qualified teachers and expert advice on tap. Sofia Santos, the scientific advisor, was the brainchild behind organizing this event, which was "immediately accepted" by the committee.

The event offers a platform for specialists, linguists, educators, and scholars to share their experiences and engage in heated debates on the teaching and learning of Portuguese. Once proceedings are wrapped up, a report compiled by the scientific committee will serve as a roadmap, providing useful guidance for Guinea-Bissau's educational system.

Julio Azevedo shares that this gathering will not only leave a mark on the Guinea-Bissau educational system but also foster scientific collaboration among the participants within the Lusophone community. He is optimistic that the contributions made by participating scholars will have a significant impact on Portuguese language education in Guinea-Bissau, providing fresh insights into teaching methodologies and the appreciation of the language.

"This is not just a theoretical debate, but a sharing of practices on how teaching is approached in other Lusophone contexts," explains Julio Azevedo. He believes that this event will prove to be an invaluable resource, especially for educators, shedding light on innovative teaching techniques and best practices from other Portuguese-speaking countries.

The Minister of National Education, Higher Education, and Scientific Research of Guinea-Bissau, Herry Mané, and the Director of Language Services of the Camões Institute, Rui Vaz, are among the enthusiastic guests of this educational event.

The objective of the congress is to emphasize the significance and importance of discussing language education from a scientific perspective, aiming to bolster Guinea-Bissau's education system and support its domestic linguistic development. Julio Azevedo articulates the vision for the congress: "It will be a momentous occasion for education, with the goal of providing a nurturing environment for the Guinea-Bissau educational system."

The First International Congress of Portuguese Language Teaching in Guinea-Bissau is co-organized by Tchico Té Unit and the Camões Language Center I.P. in Bissau, boasting support from notable partners such as the Ministry of National Education, Higher Education, and Scientific Research of Guinea-Bissau, the Embassies of Portugal and Brazil in Bissau, the International Institute of the Portuguese Language (ILLP) and Guimarães Rosa Institute, universities of Minho and Lisbon (Portugal), the University of Cabo Verde, Amilcar Cabral University (Guinea-Bissau), Leipzig University (Germany), the Faculty of Law in Bissau, and the Daniel Sampaio School Group (Portugal).
