George W. Smith-Whitfield Identified as the Main Figure
In the vibrant city of Oberlin, Ohio, George W. Smith-Whitfield is making a significant impact as the director of student support and outreach. With over a decade of experience in case management, Smith-Whitfield is a respected figure in the higher education community.
Born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, Smith-Whitfield's journey began with a Bachelor's degree in Social Work from Cleveland State University. He furthered his education, earning a Master's degree in Education and another in Divinity with a minor in Africana/African American religion from Drew University. Currently, he is pursuing a PhD in Higher Education Administration at Kent State University.
Smith-Whitfield's commitment to education extends beyond the classroom. He is a passionate advocate for social justice, advocacy, and the support and retention of marginalized students, including BIPOC and first-generation college students. This commitment is reflected in his everyday work, where he offers vital support and resources to students during their times of need.
In addition to his role at Oberlin, Smith-Whitfield serves as a pastor at a church in Akron, Ohio. His faith is evident in his approach to student support, as he strives to create brave spaces that empower students to achieve their full potential.
Smith-Whitfield's contributions to higher education have been recognised by his peers. He was honoured as the inaugural Outstanding Non-Clinical Case Manager by the Higher Education Case Management Association (HECMA).
When not at Oberlin, Smith-Whitfield enjoys travelling the world. His love for exploration mirrors his approach to life - always seeking new experiences and opportunities to learn and grow.
Smith-Whitfield is also deeply involved in various community organisations. He is a member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Association of Black Social Workers. As a Life Member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Inc., he continues to uphold the fraternity's mission of promoting unity, love, and brotherhood.
