Government Leader Calls for Backing of Nationwide College Sign-Up Initiative
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of people, particularly children, living in poor streets by launching a student enrollment campaign for the academic session 2082. The campaign, aimed at increasing school enrollment, is a part of Oli's efforts to end this condition through his campaign-based initiatives.
In his address, Oli emphasised the importance of education as the first step towards eliminating poverty in Nepal. He stated that about 20 percent of Nepal's population still lives below the absolute poverty line, highlighting the urgent need for action.
Oli's vision for education is one that fulfils the national aspiration of "Prosperous Nepal, Happy Nepali." He believes that education should not only provide knowledge but also instil a sense of responsibility towards oneself, family, nation, and the international community.
To achieve this, Oli proposed modernising education by connecting it with local knowledge, skills, and technology. He emphasised the need for practical application of knowledge for the welfare of society and for the production of quality and employment-oriented educational manpower.
Oli also highlighted the need to improve student retention in education. He suggested creating employment and self-employment opportunities within the country to ensure that education leads to meaningful careers.
The government is committed to increasing the share of the education budget and is focusing on building citizens and a society with ethical conduct and employment skills through quality education. To meet the goals of compulsory and free basic education and free secondary education, investment partnerships must be increased.
The government aims to achieve the targets of sustainable development by 2030, with a focus on making school education inclusive and of quality, from general technical to higher learning. By this, Oli hopes that the student enrollment campaign will support efforts to end the condition where children must live without guardians.
In his appeal supporting the student enrollment campaign, Oli identified the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the National Planning Commission, and various educational institutions as partners in increasing investment in the education budget. He urged everyone, including parents and related stakeholders, to contribute to the campaign's success.
In addition, Oli stated that all educational institutions should be developed as centres of excellence. He is also planning to pass the School Education Bill 2081 through discussion to further strengthen the education sector.
The student enrollment campaign begins today, marking a significant step towards Oli's vision of a prosperous and educated Nepal.
