Guidelines for the Safe Way to School Initiative for the commencing academic year 2025-2026, outlining protective measures and administration details

As the new school year approaches, the Police Headquarters Reutlingen has announced enhanced safety measures to ensure the well-being of children and adolescents in the districts of Reutlingen, Esslingen, Tübingen, and Zollernalbkreis. From September 15, 2025, the police, traffic police, and traffic accident prevention teams will pay special attention to road safety. School routes, pedestrian crossings, and bus stops will be monitored for potential hazards in the coming weeks. School routes play a significant role in the mobility development of children and adolescents. To ensure the safety of schoolchildren, these areas will receive extra scrutiny. The names of the police officers involved in the security measures have not been disclosed. Children not properly secured in a vehicle have a sevenfold higher risk of sustaining severe or fatal injuries. The police advise parents to explore the safest possible route to school with their children, familiarize them with dangers, and practice road-safe behavior. Securing children in a car according to regulations, even for short distances, is an absolute must. The police will also focus on enforcing child seat safety during their control actions. Other road users have a special responsibility to minimize the risk of accidents by being considerate of children, reducing speed, and always being ready to brake. In 2024, 33 school-related incidents involving children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 were recorded in the area of the Reutlingen Police Headquarters. Four students were severely injured, and 29 were lightly injured in these incidents. To help educate young children about road safety, the Prevention Department of the Police Headquarters Reutlingen has produced three videos on the topic, which can be accessed on the Gib-acht-im-Verkehr website. In the upcoming dark season, parents should ensure their children wear bright, reflective clothing to enhance visibility and safety. The "Safe School Route" action will be implemented in all four districts, combining information and sensitization measures with coordinated control measures. The police will work closely with schools to plan and implement prevention projects throughout the year. As hundreds of first-graders in the area of the Police Headquarters Reutlingen begin their new school year on September 15, 2025, the focus remains on ensuring their safety. Children and young people, especially first-graders, are at a higher risk of road accidents due to their lack of road traffic experience and unpredictable behavior. Parents are encouraged to avoid using "parent taxis" as they can contribute to overcrowded, hazardous school parking lots. Instead, they are advised to plan safe routes and model safe driving behavior for their children. The police and authorities in the Reutlingen region are committed to making the roads safer for all users, especially the most vulnerable—our children. By working together, we can reduce the number of school-related incidents and ensure a safer start to the new school year.
