Hamburg Leaders Gather to Boost Youth Media Literacy
A significant gathering took place at Hamburg Town Hall, bringing together around 20 representatives from local media outlets. The event, attended by key figures including Arist von Harpe, CEO of MOPO, focused on a crucial issue: equipping children and young people with the skills to discern fact from fiction in the digital age.
The meeting was led by Senator for Education Ksenija Bekeris (SPD) and Senator for Culture and Media Carsten Brosda (SPD). Brosda stressed the importance of young minds learning to recognize disinformation, highlighting its impact on democracy. Hamburg already boasts initiatives to foster critical news engagement among youth. The Senate aims to strengthen these efforts by better connecting them with schools and media partners.
The event was part of the Hamburg 'Round Tables' series, which invites diverse stakeholders to discuss pressing topics. Besides MOPO and the two senators, participants included representatives from local political parties like Hansjörg Schmidt (SPD) and René Gögge (Green Party). These round tables also cover other themes such as innovation in building technology and sustainability, attracting experts and stakeholders from those fields.
The complex information landscape for students, filled with traditional media, algorithmically controlled feeds, and artificial intelligence, makes media literacy more vital than ever. Senator Bekeris hailed the meeting as a successful start, emphasizing its role in promoting news and information literacy among Hamburg's youth.
