In the US, Trump's Adventures IV: An Unexpected Presidency for a Convicted Criminal

Well, buckle up folks, because we're heading into uncharted waters once again. This time, it's a redo for everyone's favorite reality TV star turned Orangutan-in-chief, Donald J. Trump! In a fast-paced election that took everyone by surprise, America has handed the keys to the Oval Office back to a man whose criminal record would normally make him a no-go. So, what made them change their minds?

After a nail-biter race between Kamala Harris and Trump, the unexpected occurred, and Trump marched ahead, winning state after state. In the heat of the night, he declares himself the victor - with Fox News already hailing him as the winner.

History is going to be made here, folks, as for the first time ever, a convicted criminal will hold the title of President of the United States. Trump has proven in recent years that he's Teflon Don, surviving storms like the January 6th Capitol attack, the chaos during his term, impeachment proceedings, and attacks on democracy. Multiple indictments, a conviction, scandals, and lies didn't stand a chance against him.

So, how did we get here?

Trump's campaign was built on fear and loathing. A lot can be inferred about the state of the American people from this. Some voted for him out of frustration, while others did so out of conviction. Others still were swayed by his economic policies, with many placing their own finances above moral and ethical considerations when choosing their candidate.

Many voters were driven by high inflation rates. The American people trusted Trump more on the economy than Harris, disregarding moral and ethical issues in the process.

Harris couldn't break through the noise

Harris struggled to break through with her warnings about Trump's potential authoritarian tendencies and the main issue of abortion. She faced the challenge of being an inconspicuous VP candidate. Additionally, Biden's declining popularity colors reflected on her.

According to CNN's Latino voter analysis, Trump led Harris by a significant 12% point margin.

Harris may have scored higher amongst women, but not by much more than Biden did in 2020. Trump, on the other hand, performed better than expected amongst African Americans and Latinos - despite his hate speech against minority groups and immigrants. In the case of Latinos, Trump led Harris by a whopping 12% point margin according to CNN's Latino voter analysis.

An important factor to consider is the July attack on Trump. This event significantly boosted Trump's campaign.
