Hubertus Mass Sparks Controversy Over Hunting and Christian Ethics

A Hubertus mass, a traditional event honouring Saint Hubert, the patron saint of hunters, is set to take place on November 9 at 10:00 AM in the Catholic pilgrimage church of Hergiswald. The event, however, has sparked controversy due to its association with hunting and the killing of wild animals, which some see as incompatible with Christian ethics.

Saint Hubert, initially a pleasure-seeking hunter, had a life-changing encounter with a cross-bearing stag. He subsequently gave up hunting and dedicated himself to Christianity. Ironically, today's Hubertus masses are primarily attended by hobby hunters, who see the event as a blessing for their activities. The 'Natural Horn Blowers Auerhahn Luzern' will participate in the upcoming mass.

The organisers of the event, however, face criticism. The IG Wild bei Wild has spoken out against the mass, arguing that celebrating the killing of defenceless creatures sends the wrong signal. They appeal to church representatives to distance themselves from these violent-glorifying and sectarian masses. Furthermore, driven and special hunts often follow Hubertus masses, where even senile hobby hunters chase and kill wild animals. Hunting, instead of regulating wild animal populations, often increases birth rates and populations in the area.

The upcoming Hubertus mass in Hergiswald is a reminder of the complex relationship between hunting, Christianity, and conservation. While the event honours a saint who turned away from hunting, it is now associated with activities that some see as contradictory to Christian ethics and harmful to wildlife. The IG Wild bei Wild's appeal to church representatives highlights the need for a dialogue about the event's implications and potential changes.
