Wanna know what some prisoners in Saxony-Anhalt are up to within their cell walls? Believe it or not, they're cracking open textbooks and hammering away at blueprints! Last year alone, a whopping 28 inmates snagged a school leaving certification, and 22 completed initial vocational training or retraining, according to the Ministry of Justice in Magdeburg.

Knowledge is Power

Take a gander at the juvenile detention center in Raßnitz: it's a literal hothouse of academia! Thirteen inmates scored a main school leaving certification, and nine earned their intermediate school leaving certificate last year. In the state's largest prison in Burg near Magdeburg, the big leagues got in on the action, too, with five inmates earning the main school leaving certificate and one- lucky chap- receiving his intermediate certificate.

But don't think all the action takes place during exam season: the exams for school leaving certificates are still ongoing this year! And as for vocational training, not a peep's been heard from Burg or Halle just yet.

Hammers, Not Handcuffs

In the Raßnitz juvenile detention center, a staggering 20 inmates found themselves newly certified in fields like carpentry, construction mechanics, and metalworking last year. In fact, one metalworking trainee was crowned the best by the IHK!

When it comes to retraining, Burg and Halle take the reigns. Eleven inmates have been re-skilling in fields like warehouse logistics, wood mechanics, and construction mechanics. A single student, among approximately 1,460 inmates in the state, laces up their learning sneakers every day. The Ministry of Justice didn't spill the beans on the student's field of study just yet.

Breaking the Cycle

Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Justice, Franziska Weidinger (CDU), spills the dirt on education in the penal system: "It's more than just racking up knowledge-it's a major stepping stone for rehabilitation and a opportunity for personal reorientation." Inmates equip themselves with valuable skills, knowledge, and newfound hope and self-confidence.

"Education paves a path towards a life without crime-it's a win-win for every individual and our society," Weidinger concludes.

In the pursuit of education and self-development, numerous inmates in Saxony-Anhalt have been actively engaged in vocational training, with some earning certificates in various fields such as carpentry, construction mechanics, and metalworking. This initiative, backed by the Community policy, is not just about acquiring knowledge, but a significant stepping stone for rehabilitation and personal growth, contributing towards breaking the cycle of crime.
