Increase in First-Term Enrollment: University of Bremen Bucking the Trend of Declining Student Numbers
The University of Bremen has witnessed a remarkable surge in first-year students for the winter semester of the academic year 2024/25, with a total of 4,468 individuals commencing their studies. This marked increase is a result of expanded admissions, with more courses added and the simplification of the admission process at many German universities, including Bremen.
This development aligns with Germany's broader goal of increasing the number of foreign students to over 500,000 by 2030 and promoting inclusive education and economic integration. The University of Bremen itself boasts an acceptance rate of around 60%, making it more accessible to a diverse student body, including international students.
German public universities with higher acceptance rates are also increasingly offering English-language programs and simplified visa procedures, making them more attractive to international applicants. In the winter semester 2024/25, 3,156 people have enrolled in basic programs, including bachelor's programs, marking an increase of 62 students compared to the previous year. Law, business administration, computer science, and teacher training programs have the highest enrollments in basic programs.
The University of Bremen has also seen an increase in enrollments for master's programs, with 1,312 enrollments in the winter semester 2024/25, an increase of 80 people compared to the previous year. Among first-year students in master's programs, 33 percent have a foreign nationality, coming from 70 nations, mainly India, Turkey, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Ghana.
The University of Bremen is in high demand among international students, with nine percent of students in basic programs having a foreign first nationality, including a strong presence of students from Turkey, China, and Ukraine. The University's President, Professor Jutta Günther, has stated that the University of Bremen offers attractive and up-to-date study programs.
The University of Bremen conducted a first-time first-semester enrollment procedure for the summer semester 2024, resulting in an additional 350 first-year students being enrolled. In total, 492 more students were enrolled in the first semester of study at the University of Bremen for the academic year 2024/25 compared to the previous year.
