A Gathering of Memories: The 11th Class Reunion of the Catholic Class of 1956 from the Old Ebelschule

Initial education year in Bernepark Ebel, commencing August 1, 1956

The small town of Bernepark played host to a memorable event on August 1, 2025, as the Catholic class of 1956 from the old Ebelschule reunited for their 11th gathering. This reunion brought together former classmates who shared memories of their time together in the 1950s and 1960s in the former Prosperkolonie Ebel.

The Maschinenhaus Bernepark, a historical landmark and a symbol of the industrial heritage shared by the alumni, served as the venue for this commemorative occasion. The machine house, once part of the industrial complex near Prosperkolonie, housed steam engines or machinery that powered local mining or manufacturing operations. Today, Bernepark might be a preserved or repurposed industrial park or community green area that retains historical significance.

The reunion was not the first; it was the 11th class reunion for the class of 1956 from the old Ebelschule. The Ebelschule, an old parish school known for its Catholic-oriented education, was a key institution within the Prosperkolonie Ebel region. Built primarily to house workers of the nearby coal mines, steel mills, or factories, the community was characterized by tight-knit living, often organized around a strong social and religious structure—here, Catholicism played a significant role.

Organising the reunion was no small feat, and special thanks were given to Ramona Kosobudzki, the manager of the Maschinenhaus Bernepark restaurant, and her team for ensuring a great evening. The event was filled with memories, laughter, and reminiscences as former students shared stories of their school days and lives thereafter.

A group photo of the Ebelschüler was taken during the reunion, capturing the joy and camaraderie of the gathering. Guests from neighbouring classes were also present, adding to the festive atmosphere.

Due to the community-based nature of the Prosperkolonie, the students historically lived relatively close to the school—many within walking distance or a short tram ride. After decades, former students now may come from a much broader geographic area due to migration, retirement relocation, or family moves. Reunion attendees possibly travelled distances ranging from local suburbs to farther cities across Germany and even internationally. Travel logistics were a key consideration for organising such a reunion to accommodate those coming from afar.

The 11th class reunion of the Catholic class of 1956 from the old Ebelschule was a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and the shared history of a community that has spread far and wide since 1956.

During the reunion, former students discussed aspects of their lives beyond school, including personal growth and development, highlights of their lifestyle enabled by education.

Reminiscing about the importance of the Ebelschule in shaping their lives, they reflected on how the knowledge gained there facilitated their pursuit of self-development and influenced their contemporary lifestyles.
