Initiative Unveiled: Street Sweepers by AMA to Combat Accra's Waste Predicament

Revised Article

The Accra Metropolis is getting a major clean-up, all thanks to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly's (AMA) latest initiative: the Street Sweepers. This radical move, launched in collaboration with gaming giant BetPawa, targets four bustling streets in the heart of the capital – John Evans Atta Mills High Street, Asafoatse Nettey Road, Kinbu Gardens, and Circle to Kaneshie 1st Light.

This team of 200 hardworking sweepers will be splitting their shifts, working 12 hours a day and maintaining a 24/6 physical presence, ensuring a pristine Accra from morning till dusk. To keep motivation high, these guards of cleanliness will receive a special allowance package. The authorities are also vigilant in cracking down on the rule-breakers.

The Public Health Department is lending a hand, waiving the bye-laws with a firm, yet fair approach. Accra's Mayor, Elizabeth Sackey, believes this initiative is an excellent complement to the 'Operation Clean Your Frontage' launched back in 2020, which aims to make the city's citizens take responsibility for a cleaner Accra, one frontage at a time.

Accra's waste issues are no laughing matter. The city generates a staggering 1,800 tonnes of waste daily, the most in the country, with a large portion improperly disposed of, leading to significant health issues for residents.

To address this, AMA has taken a hardline stance on sanitation offenders, with over 300 prosecuted since the start of the year. Heavy fines serve as a deterrent to future rule-breakers, and plans are underway to establish sanitary courts to expedite sanitation-related matters.

Under Sackey's leadership, numerous other initiatives are in motion, such as a Source Separation and Compost Project, aimed at reducing waste in landfills, and the Zero Waste Street Project, a joint venture with Paris to keep Accra's streets clean 24/7. AMA is also planning to distribute special polybags to street vendors and traders within the CBD to minimize litter.

Ingegner Solomon Noi, Director of Waste Management at AMA, emphasizes the critical role the Street Sweepers initiative plays in the government's mission to transform Accra into Africa's cleanest city. Noi expresses gratitude to the BetPawa team, led by Oluwatosin Ajibade and Daniel Safo, for their assistance and support in kicking off this innovative project.

Safo, representing BetPawa, calls upon sister-districts to join forces with AMA in making Accra the cleanest city in Africa, a vision shared by the government. With mettle like this, the future of Accra's streets looks bright and squeaky clean!

To further enrich your understanding, it's worth mentioning some of AMA's other initiatives:

  1. Red Line Policy: AMA reintroduced its Red Line Policy to regulate trading activities on designated pavements across the city, which helps maintain cleanliness and order in public spaces.
  2. Decongestion and Clean-Up Efforts: AMA, in collaboration with the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, completed the first phase of a clean-up exercise, focusing on removing unauthorized structures and clearing vendors from the pavements and roadways to improve pedestrian and vehicular movement.
  3. Waste Bin Donations: Students from the Association International School donated 60 waste bins to basic schools in the Accra Metropolitan area to encourage proper waste disposal practices.
  4. National Waste Management Reforms: While not specific to AMA, Ghana is promoting national waste management reforms, including integrating e-waste recycling into tertiary education curricula, which indirectly supports AMA's broader waste management goals.
  5. The Street Sweepers initiative, a joint effort between the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and BetPawa, targets four major streets in Accra for a thorough clean-up, aiming to improve the city's general news and environmental-science.
  6. In the realm of education-and-self-development, students from the Association International School have shown their commitment to health by donating 60 waste bins to basic schools, promoting proper waste disposal practices and contributing to a cleaner Accra.
  7. AMA's Red Line Policy, reintroduced to regulate trading activities on designated pavements, underscores their commitment to politics and the maintenance of order, fostering a cleaner and more business-friendly environment.
  8. The prosecution of over 300 sanitation offenders since the start of the year, along with the planned establishment of sanitary courts, reveals AMA's tough stance on crime-and-justice in the context of proper waste management.
  9. As part of AMA's broader waste management goals, Ghana is advocating for national waste management reforms, integrating e-waste recycling into tertiary education curricula, a move that aligns with the message of sustainability and responsibility in trade and science.
