The Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) Postdoc Program offers early career researchers the opportunity to delve into new research opportunities and facilities at SIO/UCSD. Here's a breakdown of the key application requirements and guidelines for the program.

Eligibility

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent qualifications in oceanography, earth sciences, atmospheric sciences, or related fields. Candidates should have demonstrated excellence and productivity in research.

Application Deadline

The deadline for candidate application materials is October 9, 2025. Applicants are encouraged to check the exact SIO postdoc announcement for the specific year as deadlines may vary.

Application Documents

Typically, the following documents are required: Curriculum Vitae (CV), list of research achievements, summary of research achievements and future research plans, teaching statement or summary of teaching experience and educational philosophy (if relevant), contact information for referees/recommenders, copies of up to five representative papers or publications, and letters of recommendation. Some postings may additionally request a cover letter, research statement, and diversity or mentoring statements.

Letters of Recommendation

Usually, 2 to 3 letters are required. Names and contact details of referees should be included with the application. Letters are typically submitted directly by referees or as part of the application package.

SIO Mentor Letters

The potential SIO mentor(s) must provide a letter of support to be included with the application materials. SIO Mentor letters should include information on access to any facilities that are especially important for the planned research. Additionally, they should provide an assessment of the candidate's training, former work, and suitability for the proposed postdoctoral project.

Candidate Responsibilities

Applicants are responsible for ensuring external referees are willing to provide reference letters. Prior to submission, applicants must contact potential SIO mentors to initiate a potential collaboration.

Application Submission

Applications are usually submitted electronically via a designated online portal. Documents are often to be compiled in a single PDF file in a specified order.

Additional Requirements/Process Notes

Applicants should clearly indicate their earliest possible start date. Some programs require or recommend an Individual Development Plan (IDP) discussion with the assigned supervisor after appointment starts. Review of applications may begin well before the deadline and continue until the position is filled.

For the most accurate and up-to-date information, it is highly advisable to refer to SIO’s official careers page or contact their postdoc program office directly to confirm the precise eligibility criteria, application deadline, required documents, and submission method for the current or upcoming application cycle.
