Journey-building tales: Ex-CIA agent shares uplifting accounts of bravery at graduation ceremony
Hot off the Press:
Highschool graduates nod to a former swim coach's bravery
While I savour my life post-CIA, the chance to engage in my local community has become priceless. And where better to immerse than our youth's esteemed institutions?
Education, yes, the bedrock of American opportunity, is my focus with these young academics.
As graduation season approaches, I find myself reassuring the embarking seniors, evoking memories of an extraordinary character I once encountered.
Gib Smith.
Our paths crossed in the late '80s, both coaching a swim team in Washington D.C. Gib, not just a superb swimmer but also a fellow admirer of the sport despite our days of competitive swimming behind us, was a cancer battler. Yet, he never missed a practice even on the days following arduous cancer treatment.
I'M SHAPING DREAMS ON CHICAGO'S TOUGH WEST SIDE
Gib was the speedster in the pool. As young pupils, including future Olympian Tom Dolan, observed his determination, they were driven to excel themselves. Gib participated in a gruelling race to raise funds for cancer research while undergoing treatment.
LET'S STOP MAKING COMMENCEMENT SPEECHES A DRAG
Gib's story is an invigorating tale for highschool graduates. He embodied resilience when faced with adversity, persisting despite the odds. Gib's swimming prowess inspired Team Dolan, who, despite falling behind in practice, was humbled by Gib's triumph over cancer.
Grit and determination are essential lessons that Gib communicated to us all. Highschool graduates must carry this attitude into their new journey. Life, like a cut-throat swim race, will test your resolve, but finishing is what counts most.
Gib's journey instils ambition in young hearts. He raised funds for cancer research while battling the disease, proving that one doesn't have to be on the sidelines when life throws challenges. Students should follow in his footsteps, engaging in initiatives that benefit their communities.
Gib finished his two-hour, 4-5-mile race with unyielding determination. He overcame cancer, earned a law degree, got married, and started a family. True, he may not be the typical epitome of inspiration, but in his extraordinary resilience, he left an enduring impression on everyone who knew him.
Graduates, let Gib be your beacon as you embark on the profound adventure that awaits. Follow his lead, strive for greatness, and above all, never lose your grit.
