Kolkata Law College Resumes Operations Following Suspension Due to Gang Rape Incident

After a week-long closure, South Calcutta Law College reopened its doors on Monday, resuming classes from July 7, 2025. The decision to reopen was made by college authorities following a nod from the Kolkata Police, and only first-semester BA LLB students were asked to attend due to their inability to fill up their examination forms earlier.

The college has implemented stringent security measures to ensure the safety of its students, particularly female students, following the gang rape incident that occurred on June 25, 2025. The incident, involving a Trinamul Congress leader and his associates, raised concerns about campus safety, especially during evening hours.

Controlled access is now a key aspect of the college's security protocol. Only students and staff with valid college ID cards are allowed entry. Every person entering the campus is thoroughly checked by police and guards at the gate. The campus presence is restricted from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with no individual, whether student, teaching, or non-teaching staff, permitted to remain on campus after 2 p.m.

Enhanced policing is another significant measure. A team comprising at least two officers and eight constables, including four women, is posted around the clock at key campus locations such as the students’ union and guard room. A reserve force team is stationed close by at Kasba Police station (about 500 meters from the college) to provide additional support if needed.

The two rooms connected to the crime—the guard’s room and the students’ union room—have been sealed off and are not being used while the investigation continues. Four people—an ex-student and casual employee (who was sacked), two students, and a security guard—have been arrested in connection with the crime. The college expelled the accused individuals.

The college is currently functioning under tightly regulated conditions with strengthened security protocols, police oversight, and restricted campus access. A heavy deployment of police personnel is present in and around the campus to maintain the safety of students and staff. Nearly 100 students visited the college after its reopening at 10 a.m., and each student was allowed entry only after a check of their ID cards.

From Tuesday, students have been asked to follow their routine class timetable. The college will now function from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and no student will be allowed to stay inside after 2 p.m. The administration and Kolkata Police are taking a comprehensive approach to prevent any recurrence and restore trust in the college’s safety environment.

Amidst these enhanced security measures, the South Calcutta Law College has integrated a strong emphasis on campus safety in its education-and-self-development program, especially following the recent crime-and-justice incident. The college administration, in collaboration with the Kolkata Police, is working diligently to ensure student safety, especially during general-news events like the recent gang rape incident.
