Library Wright: An Untapped Benefit for Scholars
In the heart of Princeton, New Jersey, the Theodore Sedgwick Wright Library at Princeton Theological Seminary stands as a testament to the institution's rich heritage and commitment to expanding access to theological education. Named in honour of Theodore S. Wright, the first African American graduate of the seminary and a prominent pastor and abolitionist, the library was established in 2013, modernising the seminary’s resources and facilities.
The library, which is one of the largest in the world devoted to the study of religion, houses roughly 1.3 million print and electronic books and journals, making it a critical hub for theological scholarship and research. While specific details about the library’s collections were not explicitly detailed, as a theological seminary library, it primarily houses extensive resources in theology, church history, biblical studies, and related disciplines. This typically includes rare theological texts, historical church documents, and contemporary academic publications that support the seminary’s curriculum and research.
The library also plays an important role in preserving the legacy and works related to significant seminary figures like Theodore S. Wright himself. One such treasure is the Senior Thesis Archives, a collection of research materials related to senior theses, which are located within the Theodore Sedgwick Wright Library. Interestingly, all Princeton University students are eligible to borrow books from the PTS Library, reflecting the close relationship between the two institutions. In fact, most undergraduate dorms are located about as close to Wright Library as they are to Firestone Library, the main library at Princeton University.
The Senior Thesis Archives are designed to be complementary to the collection at Firestone Library, offering a unique perspective on theological research and scholarship. The library building is open from 8:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. Monday-Thursday, and has more limited hours Friday-Sunday.
As a Humanities Correspondent, I had the opportunity to visit the Senior Thesis Archives and was impressed by the rich collection on a wide range of topics pertaining to religion. The library's resources are invaluable to students, faculty, and visiting scholars, and it remains integral to the seminary’s mission of training church leaders and scholars within the tradition of Princeton Theology.
