Makueni Launches First-Ever County Energy Policy Aiming for Universal Clean Energy by 2028

Makueni County has launched its first-ever County Energy Policy, aiming to provide universal access to clean energy by 2028 and decrease dependence on fossil fuels. The policy, unveiled on October 1 by Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior and Dan Wilcox of the British High Commission, is part of the Makueni-UK partnership and aligns with the UK's global commitment to climate and nature interventions.

The Makueni County Energy Policy is a significant step towards sustainable energy development. It builds on the Makueni County Energy Plan launched in 2024, under the UK Partnering for Accelerated Climate Transitions initiative. The policy aims to guide legislation, planning, and investment in renewable energy, enhancing access and building climate resilience.

The Makueni-UK partnership, which includes the Forest and Landscape Restoration Plan 2023-2032 and the solarisation of Makueni Level 5 Hospital, supports this policy. The UK has committed $15.4 billion globally to climate and nature interventions, demonstrating its commitment to combating climate change and promoting sustainable development.

The launch of the Makueni County Energy Policy marks a significant milestone in the county's journey towards sustainable energy. With the support of the Makueni-UK partnership and the UK's global commitment, Makueni is well-positioned to achieve its goal of universal access to clean energy by 2028, reducing its reliance on fossil fuels and enhancing climate resilience.
