Northwest Universities Secure Millions in Funding, Aim to Become Elite Institutions
Multiple universities in the northwest of Germany have received significant funding courtesy of the Excellence Strategy, opening up the possibility for them to join the ranks of elite universities. The universities in Hannover, Bremen, Oldenburg, and Braunschweig were selected for funding by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and the Wissenschaftsrat (WR).
Hannover, Oldenburg, and Bremen remain in contention to achieve the coveted status of elite universities. To proceed to the next stage and be recognized as an Excellence University, two of the funded Excellence Clusters must be attained. Lower Saxony's Minister of Science, Falko Mohrs (SPD), expressed optimism, stating, "This result offers numerous opportunities for Lower Saxony."
In this particular selection round, six research projects involving Lower Saxony were successful in securing funding. Upon assuming office in late 2022, Mohrs had expressed the desire to boast at least one Excellence University within Lower Saxony, as there are currently none in either Lower Saxony or Bremen.
The University of Bremen achieved a momentous victory, receiving funding for two Excellence Clusters for the first time. Bremen's Mayor, Andreas Bovenschulte, expressed immense satisfaction, referring to it as a significant triumph for the scientific community. "This is world-class research," asserted the SPD politician.
Meanwhile, disappointment loomed over the University of Göttingen, whose last application in this round fell short of success. A spokesperson for the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG), Wolfgang Brück, found the decision perplexing, stating, "This news has left us astonished and barely comprehensible."
The Excellence Strategy in Germany is a highly competitive, multi-stage process aimed at supporting cutting-edge research and bolstering the international competitiveness of universities. The German Research Foundation (DFG) manages funding for Clusters of Excellence, while the German Science and Humanities Council (Wissenschaftsrat, WR) is responsible for the Universities of Excellence funding line. The rigorous selection process encompasses extensive peer review by international experts and joint decision-making between researchers and policymakers, with decisions founded solely on scientific quality.
- In line with their aspirations to become elite institutions, the universities in Hannover, Oldenburg, and Bremen are actively pursuing vocational training programs, aiming to establish strong educational-and-self-development initiatives as part of their strategy for securing the coveted status of Excellence Universities.
- Concurrently, it is crucial to note that funding for these vocational training programs, as well as other research projects, is primarily facilitated through the Excellence Strategy, a German initiative that emphasizes finance for cutting-edge research and enhancing the international competitiveness of universities, thereby energizing the scientific community and fostering a culture of innovation.
