Memorial event for Charles Vest scheduled for March 6th

Charles M. Vest, the 15th president of MIT who served from 1990 to 2004, will be honoured with a memorial service and events at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) following his passing on December 12, 2019, at the age of 72 due to pancreatic cancer.

The memorial service will take place in Kresge Auditorium on March 6, 2020, at 4:30 p.m. After the service, a portrait of Charles M. Vest will be unveiled at 6 p.m. in the newly renamed Charles M. Vest Student Street in the Ray and Maria Stata Center. A reception will follow the portrait unveiling, also in the Charles M. Vest Student Street.

Shuttle service will be provided from Kresge to the Stata Center for the events. An electronic guest book is available for people to share memories and condolences with the Vest family.

During his presidency at MIT, Charles M. Vest renewed the Institute's commitment to education and research, developed strong ties with academic, government, and industry partners, broadened diversity, and transformed the campus with new buildings. After stepping down as MIT's president, he served as president of the National Academy of Engineering from 2007 to 2013, where he continued to influence the field of engineering.

Gifts in memory of Charles M. Vest can be made to the Charles M. Vest Presidential Fellowship Fund at MIT or to the Charles M. Vest President's Opportunity Fund at the National Academy of Engineering.

The National Academy of Sciences will also hold a memorial service for Charles M. Vest in Washington on Thursday, Feb. 20. The memorial service and events at MIT are open to the MIT community and friends of the Institute.
