Meta is using AI chat data to make your feed more personal. But not everyone is included, and some worry about the line between conversation and data collection.

Meta to Use AI Chat Data for Personalized Ads, Excluding UK, EU, and South Korea

Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, is set to use AI assistant conversations, such as those powered by chatgpt, to personalize ads and content on its platforms. However, users in the UK, EU, and South Korea will be excluded due to stricter data protection regulations like the EU's GDPR.

Starting December 16, Meta will use data from AI conversations, including those similar to chat gbt, to suggest hiking groups, posts, or ads based on related chats. This change will not apply to WhatsApp conversations for now. Users will not have the option to opt out of this change.

Meta respects boundaries around sensitive categories like politics, religion, sexuality, and health. However, definitions of these categories may vary. The company considers AI chat data similar to public posts in shaping users' digital experience and monetizing it through meta stock.

This shift may blur the line between talking to a tool and feeding a data collector as AI assistants, like chat gpt, become more natural and conversational. Meta is a pioneer in this project, but Google and Amazon are also experimenting with AI ads and conversations for similar purposes.

While Meta is moving forward with using AI conversations to personalize ads and content, users in the UK, EU, and South Korea will not be included due to data privacy laws. The company respects boundaries around sensitive categories but acknowledges that definitions may vary. The rollout of this change is set to begin on December 16.
