Millennial Trains Project Explores Data Initiatives Across U.S.
The Millennial Trains Project recently concluded a ten-day journey, visiting seven cities across the U.S. The project explored data initiatives and policy concerns, collaborating with data science experts and political leaders along the way.
The trip began in the Bay Area, where the author met with Yelp to discuss their LIVES initiative, a program aimed at improving local communities through data-driven insights. They also visited UC Berkeley to learn about their new online Master's in Data Science and CITRIS to discuss open data's role in democratic governance.
In Denver, the author delved into data anonymization policy with UC Boulder's Silicon Flatirons, discovered an app contest in Colorado's Department of State, and explored Lean & Agile methodology in government applications. The author then moved on to Salt Lake City, where they discussed data centers with Space Monkey, data-driven philanthropy with Arabella Advisors, and attended a pitch session featuring innovative water infrastructure solutions.
The author also visited Chicago, meeting with the city's Director of Analytics and learning about data-driven startups supported by Smart Chicago. Urbanists at the Metropolitan Planning Council were also discussed, who are mapping city data for infrastructure projects. In Omaha, the author met with a top actuary at a major insurance firm to discuss innovative data initiatives in auto insurance and attended the University of Nebraska's annual conference for data users.
Throughout the journey, the author identified the importance of a strong executive in developing a metropolitan or statewide data science community, as seen in cities like Chicago and Oakland. They also highlighted the need for convening local developers with government staffers and nonprofits to foster a healthy civic data infrastructure.
The Millennial Trains Project's ten-day exploration of data initiatives and policy concerns across seven cities has highlighted the crucial role of data science in modern governance and community development. With strong leadership and collaboration between various stakeholders, cities can harness the power of data to drive innovation, improve services, and enhance democratic governance.
