Judith Finell, Forensic Musicologist and Music Copyright Expert, to Speak at UCLA Commencement

Judith Finell, a renowned figure in the field of forensic musicology and music copyright, will be the keynote speaker at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music's 2018 commencement ceremony. The event is scheduled for Friday, June 15 at 4 p.m. in Dickson Court North.

Finell, an alumna of UCLA, completed her undergraduate studies in piano performance, earning a B.A. degree. She later pursued her M.A. degree in musicology from the University of California, Berkeley.

Finell's career has been marked by high-profile copyright infringement cases. She served as a forensic musicologist for the family of Marvin Gaye in their music copyright lawsuit against Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke for their 2013 song "Blurred Lines." Her expertise in musical analysis, history, literature, and theory, combined with her legal knowledge, has made her an influential voice in the field.

Finell's firm, Judith Finell MusicServices Inc., advises entertainment companies like HBO, Sony Pictures, Disney, Warner Bros. Films, Lionsgate, and Lucasfilm on copyright matters, particularly risk avoidance and music licensing. She has also testified and consulted on behalf of Michael Jackson, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner/Chappell Music, and for the estates of composer Igor Stravinsky and singer-songwriter Bob Marley.

Finell is a trustee and former board officer of the Copyright Society of the USA. She regularly speaks in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hills Bar Association, Los Angeles Copyright Society, and the Association of Independent Music Publishers. She has also been a guest lecturer at various law schools, including UCLA School of Law, Harvard, Columbia, and Stanford universities.

In addition to her litigation work, Finell has written numerous articles and a book on contemporary music and copyright infringement. She is also known for her contributions to scholarly and public discussions on music copyright and forensic musicology.
