Mysterious Virus Traps Astronaut in 'Spying Stars'

A mysterious virus outbreak strands Sri Lankan astronaut Anandi at a lavish island resort in 'Spying Stars', a unique science fiction film by Vimukthi Jayasundara. The film, produced by House on Fire and handled internationally by Diversion, explores themes of loss and grief through Anandi's journey.

Anandi, played by Indira Tiwari, returns to Earth to bury her father, only to find he has succumbed to the 'illvibe' virus. She is then quarantined at a plush resort on Hanuman Island, attended to by Nita, the trans concierge and manager. As Anandi sinks into grief, she begins to notice peculiar occurrences around the resort, including people losing limbs, surveillance cameras, and even a UFO overhead. The film challenges traditional science fiction norms, blending calming visuals with a disquieting soundscape.

Anandi finds solace with Nita and her mother, who help her heal with the aid of a local shaman. The film's narrative blends elements of the present and the future, making it a distinctive addition to the genre.

Despite the search results not revealing the film's producer, 'Spying Stars' stands out as a thought-provoking exploration of grief and acceptance, wrapped in an intriguing science fiction package. The film's unique blend of themes and visuals promises a compelling watch.
