Investigation into the well-being of more than 500 schoolchildren from Essen, conducted through the "UWE" project

Over 500 schoolchildren in Essen have their wellbeing assessed through the "UWE" project

In November 2024, a comprehensive survey was carried out across eleven schools in Essen, all with a high social index between 5 and 9. The survey, known as the "UWE" project, is a municipal tool designed to gauge the satisfaction of students in grades 4, 7, and 9.

The UWE project delved into various aspects of student life, focusing on structural improvements, social support, democratic participation, active neighbourhood interaction, violence prevention, low-threshold participation in leisure, cultural, and educational offerings, and targeted expansion of media literacy. An online survey was also conducted, focusing on how children feel in school, neighbourhood, family, and friendships.

The survey method was innovative, using a photo safari where children took pictures of their school and living environment to answer questions about their feelings. This approach aimed to provide a more personal and relatable perspective on their experiences.

The findings of the survey were presented in a meeting of the Committee for School, Education, and Science on 10.09.2025. The results showed that two-thirds of the surveyed children and youth reported high well-being, while one-third reported not feeling well. Specifically, 66% of elementary school students and 58% of middle school students in Essen reported high well-being.

The insights from the UWE project suggest the further development of in-school development processes, which can be combined with the Startchancen program. Ten of the eleven schools participating in the project are already involved in the Startchancen program, a municipal initiative aimed at supporting the well-being and development of students.

The results of the UWE survey will be incorporated into the work of the administration and into the further development processes of the municipal overall strategy in the future. Close cooperation between schools, parents, local actors, administration, and politics is crucial to holistically promote the development of students. The safety of school routes and the upgrade of schoolyards and infrastructure are among the recommendations for action based on the UWE survey results.

Further information on the results of the UWE survey can be found in document 1101/2025/4 in the council information system of the Essen city hall. The "kinderstark" registration office of the youth welfare office will deal with the results of the UWE survey.

The UWE project is a significant step towards understanding and improving the well-being and development of students in Essen. By working together, schools, parents, and local authorities can create a supportive and nurturing environment for the holistic development of students.
