Parent calls for school board chairman's departure over public celebration of Hulk Hogan's demise
In a shocking turn of events, Sarah Rockwell, the chair of Alachua County Public Schools, found herself at the centre of a controversy after posting and subsequently deleting comments on Facebook following the death of iconic wrestler Hulk Hogan.
Hulk Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, passed away on July 24 at the age of 71 after suffering a cardiac arrest at his home in Clearwater, Florida. The news of his death sent ripples across the world, but Rockwell's reaction to it raised eyebrows.
In her social media posts, Rockwell stated, "Oh did Hulk die? I didn't even know. Good. One less MAGA in the world." The comment, which referenced Hogan's past support for former President Trump and his opposition to wrestling unions, quickly went viral.
Rockwell's comments sparked outrage, with Republican leaders calling for her resignation, labeling her remarks distasteful though not illegal. A Florida parent, Jeremy Clepper, publicly demanded Rockwell resign over the incident, calling her a "disgusting, vile human being."
Clepper spoke at an Alachua County Public Schools school board meeting, where he called for Rockwell's resignation. However, he was initially removed from the meeting due to the hostile environment.
Rockwell acknowledged that her comment has eroded confidence in her ability to represent all students, families, and staff in Alachua County. In her apology, she stated that she deeply regretted her comment and never intended to wish harm on anyone, regardless of political views.
The local school board acknowledged the controversy without indicating any formal disciplinary action at this time. Rockwell has since deleted her controversial social media posts and issued an apology on her official school board Facebook account.
