Mela Phulkari, an annual event celebrating the vibrancy and rich cultural heritage of Punjab, took place from February 10-19, 2018, at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. Organised by Kirandeep Kaur, Harinder Singh, and Dr. Alka Pande, the third edition of this event showcased talents from various artists, designers, photographers, and craftsmen/craftswomen across the country.

One of the stunning exhibits at Mela Phulkari 2018 was the work of Kamaljeet Kaur, a talented designer currently pursuing her education in Fashion Design. Her Phulkari artwork, which was part of her semester-end submission in the Foundation Year, was a standout piece at the event.

Phulkari art is a native embroidery technique from the Punjab region, with origins in the famous love story of Heer & Ranjha by Waris Shah. It is commonly seen on various garments, including dupattas, shawls, and garments, and was showcased in various forms at Mela Phulkari.

While there is no information available about the institution where Kamaljeet Kaur completed her Fashion Design studies, it is clear that she has a deep understanding and appreciation for the Phulkari technique. Her work at Mela Phulkari 2018 was a testament to this, demonstrating the beauty and intricacy of Phulkari embroidery.

The art of Phulkari is practiced by approximately 3000 women in Punjab, with the majority of the work being done in Dukheri, near Patiala. Mela Phulkari is an event that pays tribute to 'Punjab', showcasing socio-cultural narratives through handcrafted Phulkari art.

In addition to Kamaljeet Kaur's work, the show featured other talented artists and designers who showcased their Phulkari creations. The retail chain 1469, owned by Harinder Singh, was also present at the event, offering a range of Phulkari products for sale.

Overall, Mela Phulkari 2018 was a successful event that highlighted the beauty and cultural significance of Phulkari art. The exhibition provided a platform for talented artists and designers to showcase their work and for the general public to appreciate the intricacies of this traditional art form.
