Renowned Journalist Ruth Weiss, Anti-Apartheid Icon, Dies at 101
Renowned journalist and author Ruth Weiss, who dedicated her life to fighting against apartheid and racism, has passed away. The 101-year-old German national, who spent much of her childhood in Aschaffenburg, left a lasting impact on South Africa and the world.
Born in Fürth in 1924, Weiss emigrated to South Africa in 1936 as a Jew seeking refuge. There, she became a prominent journalist and author, using her platform to challenge the apartheid regime. She met and worked alongside figures like Nelson Mandela, demonstrating her courage and determination in the face of adversity.
Weiss' commitment to justice earned her numerous accolades. In 2010, her former school was renamed the Ruth-Weiss-Realschule in her honor. She was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2014 and the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2024. Her final recognition came posthumously in 2023, when South African President Cyril Ramaphosa awarded her the South African National Order 'Companion of O. R. Tambo' for her lifelong commitment against racism and apartheid in South Africa.
Despite her exile, Weiss returned to Germany regularly, visiting the Ruth-Weiss-Realschule often. In 2019, the Ruth-Weiss-Society was founded to maintain her work and the values it stands for in South Africa.
Ruth Weiss' passing leaves a void in the global fight against injustice. Her life serves as an inspiration, reminding us of the power of courage, determination, and tireless commitment to justice. Her legacy lives on through the Ruth-Weiss-Society and the countless lives she touched in South Africa.
