With over 2,000 families already registered, the event promises a variety of offerings, including free school supplies, haircuts for students, health screenings, and access to community support programs through nonprofit partners.
Portia Pruitt, a local resident, expressed the importance of events like these, stating, "They're essential for families facing financial strain as they prepare for the school year." Pruitt shared a heartwarming story of a barber reaching out to ensure her children's hair was prepared for the event, showcasing the community's support.
Jadon Singleton, a program specialist at the recreation center, has been a regular at the centre since his teenage years. He emphasised that the event is about more than just providing supplies; it's about educating and positioning students for success.
Keldrick McKinney, the community programs director for the rec center, echoed Singleton's sentiments, stating, "We want to make sure that we're not just giving out supplies, but we're also educating and positioning students for success."
In addition to the school supplies and health screenings, the fair will offer food, games, and health screenings for adults, as well as information about the health clinic connected to the recreation center.
The fair addresses the financial burdens families face at the start of the school year, serving as a form of community giving back. Regardless of registration status, no one will be turned away from the event.
